Get set for some seriously dark comedy with the Beau Is Afraid UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date coming later in 2023. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the lead character Beau, it’s the latest oddity from the mind of Ari Aster, who’s previous films include Hereditary and Midsommar.
It sees Beau heading out on a journey to see his mom, despite his crippling paranoia and mild-mannered approach to the world. You can see from the image above that the film is set to be a generations spanning epic and with a 3-hour runtime (details below), it’s clearly got a lot to make it through.
AdvertisementThis is no happy trip home, though, as Beau will have to face some seriously crazy stuff during the course of the epic odyssey. Street riots, Misery-esque entrapment, cartoon landscapes, looming masked individuals, gun fights, and the lost love of his life all stand in his way.
Reviews have been very positive, and with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role it’s an early nod for award season next year. He’s already picked up an Oscar for his performance in Joker, so it’s going to be interesting to see how far he gets with his role in Beau Is Afraid before Joker 2 Folie à Deux arrives in 2024.

All of this is adding up to a lot of potential for the DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date. Ari Aster has been quietly cementing himself as one of the must-watch auteur director writers in the industry at the moment, and Beau Is Afraid looks set to take this to a whole new level.

UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date latest
AdvertisementBeau Is Afraid is due out on the big screen on April 21st, 2023, so we’re expecting it to arrive digitally with early access first. In the UK, this should be between 30 and 45 days after the cinema release, so you’re probably looking at late May at the very earliest, but more likely June 2023.
Is should then follow this up with the UK DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital release date later in the year with August a good estimate. There’s a lot more variation in schedules for home media nowadays, and a lot of it comes down to how successful the film is on the big screen.

With positive reviews, a strong cast and Ari Aster’s growing reputation, it looks like Beau Is Afraid should do pretty well. This lends itself to a longer theatrical run and gap to DVD, Blu-ray and digital, so August is a good shout for the UK.
However, there are some big films coming out in May, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and Fast X, which will take a lot of the attention. This could mean that the production might push for a slightly earlier release for home media to give it more time during the summer holiday months.
AdvertisementWe’ll know more when the early access digital comes out in North America (more details below). If this is earlier than expected then it will have a knock on impact on the DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital release.
Looking at Ari Aster’s last film, Midsommar, it had a gap of over two months for early access digital and 3 months for everything else in North America. This implies that the early access release in the UK will be on the longer side of the spectrum and that the August prediction is still in contention.
North America release date latest
Things are always a little quicker in North America when it comes to DVD, Blu-ray and digital releases and that should be the case again for Beau Is Afraid. The early access digital probably won’t be too dissimilar to the UK, though, if what happened to Midsommar is anything to go by, so that could be June for the US too.
The rest of the home media release will probably be July in North America, which would work well for the holidays. It’s a really long film, so you’re going to need a good amount of free time to digest it properly.

Beau Is Afraid Blu-ray, 4K and digital special features and extras
We’ll get the official details for the special features and extras that are bundled with the Blu-ray, 4K and digital versions of the film as we get closer to the US release date for home media. However, looking at Ari Aster’s previous work there isn’t usually much to talk about.
Midsommar only had one special feature covering the cast and characters in the film, but hopefully there will be more packed into Beau Is Afraid. With a generations-spanning story and Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role it kind of makes sense to deliver more this time around.
Audio commentary would work well or a director’s introduction to the film, but that might not be his bag, leaving the audience to work things out for themselves. There’s a lot more set pieces and special effects in Beau Is Afraid, so this would work well as a special feature too.
