Jason Manford has turned his comedy attention to classic British sitcom with the new BBC show Scarborough with music at the heart of it all, starting with the theme song, which you can listen to below. You don’t need a PHD in echo location to be able to work out where it’s set, and the seaside backdrop sets up a lot of the comedy for the show.
Jason Manford plays Mike, a former singer who now works at an amusement arcade on the sea front. The story starts with his love interest Karen, played by Catherine Tyldesdale who’s taking a turn on Strictly Come Dancing this year. The pair are going through a tough patch following a drunken incident at the local pub, The Good Ship, which adds to the music in Series 1 with its regular karaoke nights.
There are a host of other characters in the show with a couple of well known faces from Open All Hours in the cast, which includes Stephanie Cole (Miss Featherstone) as Karen’s gran Marion and Maggie Ollerenshaw (Mavis) as Geraldine, Karen’s hairdresser boss. Scarborough also introduces a few new faces with the likes of Rebekah Hinds as Yolanda, Harriet Webb as Lisa Marie and Gina Fillingham as Mandy, who all add a lot to the comedy setup.
Scarborough theme tune
AdvertisementThe theme tune is Beautiful South’s 1996 hit Rotterdam (Or Anywhere) – listen to the full track below. It’s from the band’s fifth studio album, Blue Is The Colour. Strangely enough, it didn’t take the #1 single chart spot, only getting as high as number five, despite spending nine weeks in the UK Top 40.
The title song for Scarborough doesn’t get a long play, so you only get a brief snippet of it before the sitcoms kicks back in. Whether you recognise the song, but couldn’t place the title, or you’re too young to remember much of anything from the mid nineties, you can check out the full track in the music video below.
