The hype is building for the 2023 Barbie movie, so here’s everything we know so far about the North America and UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date. We’re betting this is going to be one of the big re-watch films of the year, so it should be on a lot of wish lists when it comes out for home media.
The Barbie movie is pitched at a higher age than the dolls with Greta Gerwig in the director’s chair from a story she wrote with her Ken-like other half, Noah Baumbach. You can check out the link below to find out why it’s pitched more at grown-ups than kids, but it’s going to make for a coming-of-age film to look forward when the smaller fans eventually get up to the 12 rating (PG-13 in North America).

If you’ve seen the trailer then you know that the plots starts out in Barbie Land, replete with Malibu Beach houses on every block and a carefree lifestyle. However, when the main Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, has an existential crisis, she’s told to go to the real world by Weird Barbie, who looks like she’s gone through her own journey of discovery in the deep dark past.
The main Ken (Ryan Gosling) tags along for the journey and after a long journey they have to come to terms with all of the dramas that the real world can throw at you. It’s an interesting take for the first live-action Barbie movie and it should make for one of the year’s biggest DVD, Blu-ray and digital releases when the date comes around.

The Barbie movie UK and North America early access digital release date latest
The Barbie movie will be out in cinemas on July 21st, 2023, and it should go on to come out on digital first through early access much earlier than the DVD and Blu-ray. This should be roughly the same for both North America and the UK within a couple of months after the big screen release date.
AdvertisementThis could mean that it’ll be available to buy digitally around September 2023 on both sides of the Atlantic with the UK being a week or so later than in the US. We’ll be writing a separate post on what this means for the early access rent online release date, as there’s been a lot of variation for this in recent months.

The exact timing of this will depend a little on the success of the film at the box office, so if it tails off then it might be closer to August and if it’s a big hit throughout the summer then it will be later in September. We’re predicting big numbers for the Barbie movie, so that kind of hints at the later release date for early access digital, but we’ll update things here as they’re confirmed.
The success will be based on reviews, which haven’t been released yet, so if it picks up mixed to poor reviews then that might dampen the results. Equally, there are some other big films out over the summer that could steel the limelight with Oppenheimer movie having the exact same release date as Barbie.
They’ll both have Haunted Mansion to take on a week later and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem in early August. However, after that it gets a little quiet in terms of big movies, so it could weather the storm of these and have a long run throughout the summer.
The Barbie movie UK DVD, Blu-ray, and standard digital release date latest
AdvertisementThis will all have a knock-on affect on the UK release date for DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital versions of the film. Looking ahead, we’re probably looking at late-November for these to come out, which would be pretty perfect timing for Christmas sales.
In fact, the cinematic release date was probably chosen with an eye on this to make the most out of home media. It’s possible that the distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures might want to go a little earlier to give it even more time for gift sales, so we could be looking at a date earlier in November.

North America DVD, Blu-ray, and standard digital release date latest
There’s usually a slightly earlier DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital release date for North America, so that should be the case with the Barbie movie. As a result, a good projection would be October 2023, which would give it a huge window for sales in advance of Christmas.
Thanksgiving is a big time for films, but this is normally movies on the big screen, so the release probably won’t go out of its way to coincide with that. It’s in late November too, which is probably too late for the the Barbie movie to land well in time for the Holidays.
AdvertisementHowever, the Autumn mid-term break is in late October, so this could be a good date to aim for. That would give it a rough target of October 23rd, although, it might get a release a week earlier to give it some breathing room to build the hype.

Barbie movie extras and special features
The official list of extras and special features for the Blu-ray, 4K and digital versions of the Barbie movie won’t be confirmed until we get a little closer to the release date. However, there are bound to be features on the cast, locations, behind the scenes, heritage of the dolls, bloopers and deleted scenes.
The DVD probably won’t come with any extras, so if you want the full Barbie experience then you’ll need to plump for either the Blu-ray or 4K versions. The digital version is a maybe at this stage, but we’ll update you with more details as they’re confirmed.
