It’s been a long time since the first film came out, but it looks like the Avatar The Way of Water UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date is going to be one of the biggest in 2023. Whether it can get closer to the record-breaking box office success of the 2009 original remains to be seen, but it’s possible with extra showings during the summer and future anniversary appearances.

Story and introduction
The box office smash was 2022’s equivalent to Spider-Man No Way Home, which dominated cinemas over the holidays in 2021. It’s got James Cameron back in the director’s chair and with his previous success with Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic and the first Avatar film there was always a good chance he’d do it again with Avatar 2.
AdvertisementThe story picks up with Jake Sully and Neytiri a decade after the events of the first film where they triumphed against the might of Colonel Quaritch and the RDA. Jake is now permanently transformed into his Na’vi form and Pandora has existed in relative peace since the battle.
However, danger looms and Quaritch and his RDA forces have returned to the lush moon, this time to claim it as a replacement to Earth. Jake and Neytiri are forced to explore more of Pandora and make their way to the shore to live with a new Na’vi clan called the Metkayina.
If you’ve already got the first film on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D or digital then you’re probably going to want to add the sequel to your collection too. Avatar The Way of the Water was out on the big screen over Christmas 2022, and it looks like they skipped the early access Home Premier rental, so the rest of the home entertainment options might be your best bet.

UK Blu-ray, digital and DVD release date latest
AdvertisementFollowing its debut on the big screen on the 16th December 2022, the Avatar 2 UK Blu-ray and DVD release date should be around June or July 2023. You can see from the image above that it will be coming to Disney Plus on June 7th, so we’re assuming that it will be after this for the physical release.
The digital version came out in North America to buy on March 28th, 2023, and it followed in the UK on April 3rd, 2023. Rental is a bit more complicated and you can find out more with the link at the bottom of the page.
There are a few considerations to take into account for the rest of the home media options. Firstly, the release has been heavily impacted by the huge success of The Way of Water at the box office. It’s been getting closer to the numbers seen on Avatar way back in 2009, so it had a longer run.
As a result, spring came and went and June looks likely to do the same, so July is the latest contender for the DVD and Blu-ray to come out in the UK. You can see below that it will be arriving on physical formats in North America in late June, so this is another indicator that we might get it in July over here.

Secondly, the first Avatar is currently available on Disney+ as part of the ownership of 20th Century Fox. This has carried over to the second film, which could limit things in terms of the UK Blu-ray, digital and DVD release date. For example, there have been no options for the early access Home Premier rental, and it could be later than usual before it arrives.
We were expecting it to launch on Disney Plus before the rest of home media, so it was no surprise now it’s available. It’s clearly going to get a period of it being the focus to help to build subscriptions, which is why we’re expecting it to arrive in July now.
It also had a stint of being for sale in the US on digital for a limited-time low price, so that was another good sign that the DVD and Blu-ray are on their way soon. It’ll be available on both in North America first, so now that it’s on it’s way there we can bank on a UK release date not too far after it.
North America release date latest
The home entertainment release in North America will be a little earlier than in the UK, and has now been confirmed to come out on June 20th 2023 on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. It will also be available on Blu-ray 3D, which is incredible, because the format hasn’t had a big new film in a long time.
As mentioned above, the early access digital purchase release was March 28th, 2023, so earlier than the UK by a week. It’s being referred to as early access, but the price point seems like the slightly less expensive digital option, so so it’s clearly going its own way in both North America and the UK. It’s kind of setting new ground for itself, so it was hard to predict things for the the DVD, Blu-ray and 4K versions before the confirmation came in above.
