If you’re looking forward to the upcoming release date for Avatar 2 The Way of Water, you might have seen mention of a game linked to the film. Your eyes haven’t entirely deceived you, but it’s not quite as straightforward as you might imagine.
Firstly, there is definitely an Avatar game on the way and it’s currently set to come out in the aftermath of Avatar 2. However, the two aren’t actually as linked as that makes it sound with both having distinct plots and characters.

There will be an element of overlap, so we’ll cover that to give you an idea about where the two entries in the franchise fit in to the timeline of what is set to become a significant series.

What is the Avatar game?
You can see for yourself in the first look trailer below, but the game that will release after Avatar 2 is called Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. It’s set to be a first person action adventure game with an open world setting on the same planet as the movies.
AdvertisementThe standalone story will see you playing as a Na’vi, similar to the characters in The Way of Water, but here you will have to head out into the Western Frontier, which has not been explored yet in the films. The similarities come in the form of the threats that you’ll face as you head out on your journey.
As in Avatar 2, and the original 2009 film, the RDA (Resources Development Administration) will be the biggest danger to the existence of the indigenous people of Pandora. They continue with their mission to exploit the lush Alpha Centauri gas giant moon.
AdvertisementThis will also be the case with the films, so there’s clearly going to be an element of crossover between the two. It’s entirely possible that there will be even more in time if they are both as successful as you’d expect from the franchise.
The game was initially due to be released in 2022, but it has now been pushed back a year or two, so it’s going to be interesting to see whether or not this will be to create even more plot and character links. Hopefully, the project doesn’t get canned entirely, but with another three more films due out after Avatar 2 it seems unlikely at this stage.
You can see from the first look trailer that development seems fairly advanced and with the initial 2022 release date, you’ve got to imagine that it was close to completion before the delay. If it had come out this year it would have had tough competition from God of War Ragnarok, so maybe it was just a case of putting things back to make the most of the launch.
The counter argument for this is that the link with Avatar 2 would have been in Frontiers of Pandora’s favor and there is no film out in 2023 to support it. If it’s good enough then it might not need it, but if there’s an element of doubt then it could tie in with the third film, which is due out in 2024.
If there is a plan to link the stories, then that would add even more weight to the 2024 projection. However, if it’s just a case of refining the game and giving it a better release window then would could see it arrive towards the end of 2023.
There will still be some pretty big games out in Q4 next year with the likes of Final Fantasy VII Remake Rebirth, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Pikmin 4 all in the frame. The delay could just be about making the game as competitive as possible, so they don’t rule things out entirely, but it would make sense to bring the game out at the same time as the sequel to Avatar 2.
