Back with another single on the back of last year’s album release, Suck It And See, the Arctic Monkeys return with another big hitter in Are U Mine. Dark and laced with another hit of pseudo-deprecating humour, it’s a smart new single from the Ice Mandrills.
The song itself has got heavy plodding riffs that are mirrored with water logged bass lines. The vocals are understated and perfectly pitched with the comically-timed interruptions of high pitch harmonies from the half way mark onwards.
Lyrics are simply chorused with the call “are u mine”, but the verse is a bit more random with talk of the Lone Ranger and Tracey Island bringing back the nostalgia love that they seem to always come back to.
The video is the typical mirror on the nonses that’s another recurring theme in the Arctic Monkeys’ evolving dialogue, but as ever it’s more complex than the flick of a finger. However, more than any of that, Are U Mine is a great new single, released to set up the start of their US tour.
