Anselm Kiefer exhibition, The Royal Academy Of Arts

Anselm Kiefer, Morgenthau plan (detail) 2013 c. Anselm Kiether Photography Charles DupratThe work of German Painter and sculptor, Anselm Kiefer, will be getting its first major retrospective this year at The Royal Academy Of Art, showcasing the artist’s significant contribution to contemporary art. Building on his contributions to the RA’s 2010 Summer Exhibition with the impressive Einschüsse, the display will feature a wide range of items from his extended back catalogue of work.

The Anselm Kiefer exhibition is set to open at The Royal Academy of Art of the 27th September 2014, running through to the 14th December 2015, giving modern art fans two and a half months to catch the installation. Tickets for the exhibition are available to book in advance and cost £15.50, including a £1.50 donation to the RA, and concessionary prices are available at £14.50 for senior tickets (including gift aid donation) and £9 for students, 16-19 year olds, Income Support, Jobseekers and people with disabilities (including entry for support or carer). Entry is free for under 16s.

The exhibition spans the full forty years of Kiefer’s career, in which his work has become synonymous with a new style of art called New Symbolism. It will be the first time that a major retrospective on the artist will take place in the UK, but in addition to the look back, it will also feature new work by the artist created especially for the exhibition itself, bringing something new and unseen to the Royal Academy Of Art display.

Items included in the exhibition will include paintings, sculptures and some epic installations to create a walk through of the work Kiefer has done and the challenging nature of his ambitions. Subject matter is one of the more important aspects of his creative production as he has successfully tackled uneasy topics like Nazi rule in Germany and the horrors of The Holocaust.

What we love about Kiefer’s work is the weight that is comes with, whether you’re looking at the scale of the subject matter or actual physicality of the outlets themselves. Size is to be expected from the German artist as he stands up to big questions about the past, mythology, literature, science and the potential of society through well crafted symbolism, but equally his use of colour, phenomenal textures and unconventional materials like straw, ash, clay, lead, and shellac have helped to make his work stand out so strongly.

The Anselm Kiefer exhibition is the latest single artist show to grace The Royal Academy Of Art, following up previous displays and retrospectives that have featured Anish Kapoor and David Hockney. The latest in the series looks set to be as impressive as its predecessors as the “colossus of contemporary art” brings his courage encrusted and challenging work to London throughout Autumn and early winter 2014.
