The arrival of the trailer for A Confession has set the top for what looks like its going to be a highly taught thriller with a ratchet wound theme tune and dramatic true story. It also confirms the release date for the series, which will start in early September, as well as showing the impressive cast together for the first time.
It stars Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) in the lead role as Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who leads the investigation of the disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan in 2011. In an effort to find Sian as quickly as possible, Fulcher breaks protocol, but you can see in the trailer and hear in the theme song running through it that this is going to be far from easy.
AdvertisementThe plot intensity steps up when Fulcher closes in on the chief suspect, a local taxi driver, which results in a standoff as the Detective Superintendent tries to get the truth out of him. It’s a hard fought investigation, but the aftermath of it all is set to build to a sinister close, turning the case upside down.
A Confession theme tune
The theme tune for A Confession, which you can listen to in the trailer at the bottom of the page, is fairly hushed with dramatic notes. As the story is true, it’s clear that the production is trying to be as respectful as possible to the seriousness of the actual events that took place, which comes through in the song.
It mixes extended piano notes with a slightly haunting vocal to give the theme a somber mood, which works well. Had it have been slightly more dramatic it would have messed the balance of the show opener, but as it is it supports the overall ethos of the production very well.
A Confession release date
A Confession arrived on ITV with an air date for Episode 1 of the 2nd September 2019. The rest of the series went out weekly every Monday night at 9pm.
There are 6 1-hour episodes in total and with Broadchurch’s Paul Andrew Williams in the director’s chair, this could well be the next big name in TV thrillers.
You can watch the series on ITV player with the episodes arriving weekly until the final episode airs on the 7th October 2019.
A Confession cast
In addition to Martin Freeman, ITV has pulled together an impressive cast that includes Imelda Staunton (Paddington) as Karen Edwards, the mother of another girl who she thinks might be connected somehow. The taxi driver is played by Joe Absolom, Sian’s Mother Elaine Pickford is played by Siobhan Finneran (Cold Feet) and Charlie Cooper has been cast as Sian’s boyfriend Kevin.
