One of the big plus points in favour of living in the big smoke is the fact that there is loads to see and do here. There’s a huge amount of live music, stand up comedy shows and plays to see, but the big problem is that London livin’ aint cheap, especially when it comes to big plays at big theatres. However, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is readdressing this negative by putting up 700 £5 standing tickets for every performance, including all of its Shakespeare plays.
There are lots of them to see too. The Merry Wives of Windsor is playing at the moment (running up until 2nd October 2010), but there’s also Henry VIII (running until 21st August), The Comedy of Errors (31st August – 4th September 2010) and Nell Leyshon’s Bedlam (5th September – 1st October), the first play written by a women ever performed at the Globe Theatre.
Getting to see a Shakespeare play for £5 (£7 including the annoying booking fee) is amazing. While having to stand throughout an entire Shakespeare play could get a bit tiring towards the end, it’s still a great opportunity.
Though The Globe is lucky in that it’s got the Yard to accommodate a large amount of standing tickets, it would be great if other theatres created similar initiatives to open their doors to people with a lower purse than the average archduke.
