Last night saw the 2016 BAFTA Film Awards confirming its praise for some of the year’s best movies and with The Revenant quite rightly leading the way in terms of wins on the night it looks like it’s been a good call by the judging panel overall. You can see the details for all of the winners and nominees below and what it lacks in surprises or too much in the way of debate it should give you at least a few movies to add to your watch list.
Overshadowing the whole event though is the sad fact that Stephen Fry has taken himself off Twitter as a result of a joke he made as the host, referring to Best Costume Design winner, Jenny Beavan, as looking a bit like a bag lady after she’d been given her award. We don’t really follow him, so it’s no skin off our nose as such, but it does seem a bit like a storm in a teacup and it will mean that his online comments will now be free to become more verbose, so it could end up being a bit of a double edged sword (unlike Rebel Wilson’s comments below, that isn’t meant as a penis joke).
Luckily, there were a few other choice incidents to take a little of the heat off Stephen Fry as there has also been a lot of comment on the Twit-o-sphere about the sphericality of Tom Cruise’s kisser, as he looked a bit like he may have come down with a mild case of the mumps or he’s taken to storing little pockets of food in his cheeks like a Scientologist gerbil. From our point of view we’d have to say a lot of the jokes are pretty far fetched, but ironically this was probably the right time for some kind onlooker to squirt some water on his face to reduce at least a little of the swelling. However, in all fairness, Ruth Davidson, Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, stretched things a bit far when she compared him to a 90s-era Sandy Toksvig.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s mom-loving speech touched a lot of hearts, but to be honest we were probably more moved by his horse tent rebirth scene in The Revenant. There was also some solace for girls with big bones from the lovely Kate Winslet during her speech, where she took the opportunity to humiliate her ridiculous drama school teacher who told her that she’d only stand a chance in fat girl roles. Who’s laughing now Mrs. Nobody Fatty Fatty Bum Bum Face?
Additionally, Rebel Wilson took a firm look at the line and decided she’d judo roll effortlessly over it with her comments about racial diversity, but you know what they say… rebel by name, racial activist by nature (they say it where we’re from, so don’t judge us). Her presentation of the Best Supporting Actor Award was probably the funniest moment of the night as she started out by saying, “I have never been invited to the Oscars, because as you know they are racist.” She followed that up with the genius line, “But the Baftas have diverse members, and that’s what we all want to see in life isn’t it… diverse members.” If that wasn’t enough she managed to make Idris Elba blush by saying, “You’re making me a bit nervous, but I’m just socially programmed to want chocolate on Valentine’s Day.”
However, the crowning moment of the 2016 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony was the fact that Sidney Poitier was awarded the Academy Fellowship for his incredible contribution to cinema. With more than 50 films throughout his 70-year career with classics including To Sir, with Love, The Lost Man and Lilies Of The Field, for which he won the 1963 Academy Award for Best Actor, it was a very fitting tribute.
The night also had some of the coolest brochures we’ve seen in a long time, which you can see the in the artwork pictures above. The 2016 BAFTA Film Awards Brochure covers were designed to represent each of the five Best Film nominees with illustration by artist Levente Szabó and creative direction and design from Human After All and they look smashing.
