Villagers, The Waves

Villagers, The WavesVillagers are back for the tail end of 2012 with their new single, The Waves. Unconventional and infinitely esoteric, it’s a good indication that their upcoming follow-up to 2011’s Mercury Nominated and Ivor Novello Award winning debut album, Becoming A Jackal, will be impressive in the least.

The cool Carib-electo backdrop to the song is subtle and perfectly balanced with Conor J. O’Brien’s flatline vocals. It doesn’t necessarily have instant appeal, but there’s something straight away that keeps you holding on and after a listen or two you’ll be hooked.

As it builds up, new tranches of music crash on top of each other before it all goes off on a freakout tangent of electro noise, ending inevitably on a single cymbal.

Villagers’ The Waves is available to download now on iTunes here, but it will also be released on a special limited edition 7″ single on the 22nd October 2012.
