Iron Man 2 age rating, parents guide and UK release date

Robert Downey, Jr. returned to the iron encased lead role of Tony Stark as Marvel continued its reign over the big box office smashes at the end of 2009 with the Iron Man 2 UK release date flying in like an armoured dove with a goatee. You can also find out more about he age rating certificate for the film with our parents guide notes, along with the story, cast and runtime.

Story synopsis

Iron Man 2 saw Stark and the rest of the free world battling for peace against Mickey Rourke’s embittered Ivan Vanko, AKA Whiplash, after the events of the first film. The plot follows Stark as he tries to come to terms with the fact that the arc reactor that is keeping him alive is also slowly poisoning him to death thanks to the palladium needed to make it work.

If that isn’t bad enough, he also needed to face the terrifying Vanko, who has also crafted his own arc reactor and turbo-powered energy whip suit to exact his revenge on the Stark family for the impoverished demise of his father. Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash looked impressive in the trailer, and his full performance turned out to be equally impactful, leading up to an epic final battle.

With a slight drinking issue plot line for Stark, along with the first murmuring introductions of Mandarin to the franchise, there’s a lot of elements of the comic book series to keep the die hard fans happy. For the rest of us, Iron Man 2 is a roller coaster ride of massive proportions. There were also a few surprises along the way leading up to the 2013 release of Iron Man 3.

Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) takes up the reigns of Stark Enterprises as the CEO to give Tony the space to deal with all the craziness. The full force of military tech rival, Hammer, adds even more of a challenge for Iron Man, so there’s a lot crammed into the film.

Age rating and parents guide

The UK age rating for Iron Man 2 is 12, which ties in with the normal certification that Marvel Cinematic Universe films tend to get continuing right the way up to the latest film, The Eternals in 2021. In North America it picked up a PG-13 certificate, which is in keeping with the rating in the UK.

In terms of a parents guide, there is the usual comic book violence to take into account, along with a little language, which is bleeped out. The threat level is fairly significant with a strong performance from the villain Whiplash (played brilliantly by Mickey Rourke) and there’s a little flirtation from Tony Stark in the direction of Black Widow that has fairly romantic implications to say the least.

Runtime

Iron Man 2 has a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes, which is a little shorter than more recent MCU films. Obviously, Avengers: Endgame was an anomaly all by itself at a little over 3 hours, but even Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was nearly ten minutes longer.
